JOSH Minogue looks set to pick up where he left off last year with a brilliant performance in the Murray Bushrangers’ 45-point victory over the Gippsland Power in Morwell yesterday.
The North Albury star kicked two goals in the 15.11.101 to 7.14.56 win, with coach Darren Ogier praising the mental fortitude of his side, after they were challenged in the third quarter.
Gippsland kicked three goals to one after half-time in what was a close contest throughout the afternoon, before the Bushrangers broke the game open in the final term.
Ogier said the team did well to step back and return to their successful structures at three-quarter time.
“I’m really happy with the way the team responded in the second half,” he said.
“Everyone stepped up when they needed to.
“Our workrate and attack on the ball was superb.”
Jy Simpkin kicked three goals, including two in the final quarter, while Minogue, Will Brodie, Levi Middleton and Kyle Galloway kicked two each, with the Bushrangers finishing with nine individual goalkickers.
Ogier said ensuring the whole team was contributing offensively was key to their success.
“It’s important that we have a range of contributors,” he said.
“Our game plan is based around team play, making sure that we get a lot of different guys bob up at different times.
“The guys brought a great attitude into the game, and we were able to hang in there longer than they could, and we got the result we wanted.”
Ogier was heartened by the fact that the likes of Dylan McDonald, David Mennen and Josh Schache were absent from the winning side.
“The workrate was what really stood out today, the old cliche about players doing their role certainly came into play,” Ogier said.
“Getting early wins on the board is critical, and we’ll take a lot of confidence away from the way we played here.
“We let ourselves down a bit in the third quarter, but to the team’s credit, we fought back extremely well once we resumed the things that fell away after half-time.”
